How to survive a breakup, step by step

A breakup goes through phases: shock, pain, searching for meaning, acceptance, a new beginning. In the first days mainly take care of the basics and resist the urge to drink, dig through old messages or look for rescue in a new relationship. Over time bring back routine, lean on people and gradually build a life that is not just „life without a partner“, but your own.

Veronika (29) broke up with Tomáš on a Tuesday. On Wednesday she went through the entire photo album of the last three years, on Thursday she sent a „final message“ (one of five), on Friday she did not go to work. A month later she was still looking through his photos and although she was meeting people, she did not feel well. A therapist helped her name the fact that grief has its own course and cannot be skipped. She went back to running, started having lunches with a colleague and after a while noticed she remembered what her worst days used to look like. It still hurt, but the space in her head was filling up with a new life.

Why a breakup hurts so much

A breakup is a loss. You lose a partner, plans, routine, an identity („we“ becomes „I“) and often part of your circle of friends. The brain reacts similarly to other losses: energy, sleep and appetite fluctuate. Feeling terrible is not weakness, it is a normal reaction to a big change.

The good news: grief moves in phases, not in a straight line. Shock, pain, searching for meaning, acceptance, a new beginning. In practice the phases alternate and return. Crying one afternoon and discovering a new hobby the next does not mean you are not getting over it. It means you are human.

How to survive a breakup: 10 steps

The first days

  • Let people see you. At a friend's, at your parents', at your brother's. Solitude in the first days makes the pain bigger.
  • Keep the basics. Eat, sleep, drink water. It sounds trivial, but three days on instant soup with ruined sleep will make the next week worse.
  • Do not read old messages. Pulling the thread out of a wound: every trip through the message history prolongs the grief. If you need them, at least put them in a folder and move them away.

The first weeks

  • Write it, do not send it. The emotions and anger you need to express, write into a notebook. Not at 3 a.m., not into a message.
  • Bring back routine. Work, sport, sleep, food. Routine is an anchor. Ideally planned days ahead, not improvisation that depends on your mood.
  • Put people in the diary. Three plans a week, a month ahead. You are building structure you do not have to improvise when your energy is low.
  • Step away from scrolling. An Instagram where their new life can appear is an unnecessary torture device. Mute, unfollow, do not let it pull you in.

The first months

  • Get the memories out of sight. Not necessarily throw away. Put away. Photos, gifts, messages, the jumper that belongs to them. You will be able to look at them in a year. Right now you do not need them.
  • Find new things. A course, a sport, travel, a friend you have nothing in common with. Not necessarily a new partner. It is about your day not starting with the thought that they are gone.
  • See a professional when it does not lift. If after a month you still cannot sleep, cry every day or wonder whether life is interested in you at all, contact a psychologist. That is a sign it is more than ordinary grief. The crisis line is free at 116 123 (in the Czech Republic).

What to avoid after a breakup

  • Checking how they are doing. Monitoring, asking friends, glances at profiles. If you need to do it, do it once, not every day.
  • Alcohol as therapy. It helps for a few hours, makes sleep and anxiety worse. The next morning is worse.
  • Hunting for a new partner straight away. Ordinary needs and „showing the ex“ are not a good motivation for a relationship. When someone asks „and how are you?“ and you answer with who and where, your friends will notice.
  • Endless conversations with the ex. „We are staying friends“ often means that neither of you can give up contact and the grief keeps moving forward.
  • Vows nobody wants to read. Promises like „I will never be this stupid again“ are not useful. Counting risks is not an outcome, it is just fear.

When to seek help

If after a month you still cannot sleep, have no appetite, feel heavy sadness every day and everyday life does not work, contact a psychologist or psychiatrist. That is not weakness, it is a sensible step. If you think about wanting it all to end, or you hurt yourself, reach out immediately. The crisis line 116 123 is free and runs around the clock. In acute danger call 158 (in the Czech Republic).

When you are ready

There is no need to rush. New relationships begin the way previous ones did. Except that a person who has been through a breakup knows what they want and what they do not. On lāska.ai people describe their story in their own words, so from the first recommendation you can see whether you share a similar past, pace and intention. And the chat opens only once you both stand behind your interest.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get over a breakup?

There is no universal deadline. Months are often mentioned, longer for long relationships. What matters is how much the grief limits your everyday life, not how many days have passed.

Should I talk to my ex?

Not at the beginning. Later, once the emotions settle, friendly contact is possible, but at first contact prolongs the grief.

What should I do when the breakup comes back at night?

Keep your routine: sleep, food, movement. In the morning write down what is bothering you and plan something in the evening that pulls you out.

How soon should I start a new relationship?

If you are looking for a relationship to „get back at the ex“ or fill a gap, wait. Wait until you think about a new person as a person, not as something to post.

When should I see a psychologist?

When after a month sleep, food or work still do not work and the grief does not lift. Or immediately, if you have thoughts of self-harm.

Is it normal to feel relieved?

Yes. Relief can appear alongside sadness and anger. It is not proof that the relationship did not matter to you.
